Cairo: Egypt’s Cultural and Historical Capital
Cairo has long served as a hub for culture, art, and history. As the capital of Egypt, it is the largest metropolitan area in Africa, the Middle East, and the Arab world, ranking as the 15th largest city globally.
Located in northern Egypt, Cairo covers approximately 528 square kilometers. It sits 120 km (75 mi) west of the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal, 165 km (100 mi) south of the Mediterranean Sea, and extends along both banks of the Nile River near the Nile Delta.
Throughout history, Egypt has always had a capital, but modern Cairo was officially founded in 969 CE by the Fatimid dynasty. Since then, it has remained the political and cultural heart of the region.
